Finding Proper Footwear to Prevent Back Pain

Posted on 2010-04-14 06:12:02

Finding the right footwear has long been known to help back pain.  If your feet are properly aligned, then the rest of your body should be able to follow suit.  Think of shoes as the foundation that your body sits on, if it’s too loose the rest will be unsteady and that may lead to back pain.  Finding the correct shoes however, may be able to help you have a good, solid foundation.

  • When looking for shoes, make sure that your foot doesn’t move around too much in them and that they have a proper fit.
  • You want to find some that fully support your foot, and are comfortable.
  • If you work out, you may want to think about replacing those shoes every three months or so due to the normal wear and tear.
  • Make sure that they aren’t too heavy.
  • If you have high arches, look for shoes with more cushioning or padding in them.

Generally, if your shoes twist in the middle area they aren’t supportive.  They should fit comfortable and snug against your foot.  To test padding, press down with your finger, and judge the give in the shoe.

While supportive shoes may cost a little more than the not supportive kinds, you can’t put a price on health and wellness.  After all, you are worth it, and your comfort and staying well are very important. Finding proper support for your feet may help the rest of you stay adjusted as well.

Concerns About Elderly Being Over Treated With Costly Back Pain Surgery

Posted on 2010-04-09 04:52:30

Complex back surgery has been going through a large upswing in use for elderly patients.  While doctors are still looking into it, they are worried that among patients, and primarily the elderly, they may be getting surgery when it may not be necessary- especially when so many other options exist.

For conditions as common as arthritis and spinal stenosis (a common condition in the elderly in which the spinal canal narrows, causing pain in the back and legs), there are many treatment options.  Yet, many are being told they need complex surgery, in place of other treatments that are far less invasive.

The main issues faced with the overuse of surgical methods are an increase of harmful and life-threatening complications and adding on to the high costs of health care.  Especially when there are many other treatment options available for even seniors, from physical therapy to much more minor procedure to remove bone growths.

When there are so many non-invasive options, spinal surgery and vertebrae fusing especially, while an option in many cases, seems to be experiencing an issue with being overused.

While there are a number of people out there who typically thing that more ‘doctoring’ and more medical procedures mean more healing, this isn’t always the case.  Sometimes a far simpler and more ‘natural’ treatment may instead offer easier and far less painful (or invasive) healing for patients'.  There are many other options for those with many different kinds of back pain, and the worry stems from certain treatments being a first resort as opposed to a last.

While there is no doubt that in some cases, the surgery may be necessary and any benefits would far outweigh the risks.  With the newer face of health care, many are looking into finding better alternatives for patients, and that sometimes may mean that surgery may be instead used in cases where it is completely, (and without a doubt) necessary.

Could Vitamin D Help Your Back Pain

Posted on 2010-04-07 05:25:18

Vitamin D is being clamed lately as the miracle vitamin, with some evidence that it may be able to help treat many common ailments, including back pain.  In an interesting development, scientists have been studying the effects of Vitamin D on many things and the effects have been surprising.

While most people get a lot of their vitamin d through the sun and sun exposure, that doesn’t mean you need to turn into a sunbather right now.  There is still a lot of research to be done before it becomes official, and to figure out how much and more details, but many signs are pointing to it as a possible addition to treatment for many people who suffer from back problems.

While the sun isn’t the only way to get a good amount of vitamin d, there are many other options.  It’s also commonly found in many foods, and you can easily find it in supplement form as well.

This is a good start, especially for those who may want to break away from many of the traditional pain treatment options.  Many are nervous about the medication treatments available for pain, and understandably so.  Thankfully modern progression of technology is revealing many new options for those who may not want to start a medication regimen.

Before you decide to start your own vitamin d regimen, as with most things you should talk to your doctor to make sure that he both knows about it and that it won’t interfere with any medications.

Avoiding Back Pain From Yard Work

Posted on 2010-04-05 09:37:58

Many areas are at the beginning of the warmer springtime months, and with summer right after that.  It’s the time of year where back injury and pain is all too common, and usually preventable.  It is important to remember to take precautions against hurting your back and maybe getting a lifelong injury that could so easily be avoided.  With all the yard work and chores to get done (even those fun ones) it’s still very important to take care of your spine and make sure it keeps working well for a lifetime.  The spine is the central ‘highway’ of your body and caring for it is one of the most important things you can do for health and well being.

Stretch!

It is something often repeated, but it remains a great and simple thing to do for your back.  Proper stretching before any heavy lifting (in addition to lifting with your knees) can truly help prevent a whole array of injuries and problems.

Adjust.

Sitting at long lengths of time (even at a lawnmower) can spell disaster for your back.  Remember to stop, and stretch and adjust often to avoid problems.

Be kind to your feet.

Wearing proper footwear is as important as wearing sun block in terms of back health.  While yes, especially in the heat the temptation to wear flip flops (for an example) is a big one.  Finding and wearing proper support for your feet will pay off dividends later.

Generally it is very important to exercise and stretch and that including gardeners as well.  Gardeners tend to sit hunched over for a long time, and they should try and remember to stretch often and take breaks as needed.  If you enjoy your garden and gardening and do it often, you may be able to talk to your doctor and find out any additional supports you can buy.  There are a variety of back and body oriented things that help you avoid pains and any issues.

Work At a Computer? Some Advice to Avoid Back Pain

Posted on 2010-04-02 06:11:24

Those who work at computers are at a much greater risk for back pain, (and other conditions) that can come from extended periods of sitting and a generally awkward position that you must sit in.  With so much being digital today, and so many working with computers, there has been an upswing in back pain related issues.  There are some ways to avoid aggravating or even developing a condition related to your computer work.

First and foremost it is important to have proper back support and a great way to do it is inventing in a proper chair.  Look for one with a high back and firm but soft padding.  A great option is to browse around your local office supply store, and look into their ‘executive’ collection.  The ‘executive style’ chairs tend to be higher and have more in the way of proper support.  Also be sure to look for a chair that has an adjustable height.

Be sure to adjust the chair as often as you can, the difference in height between adjustments can help you to avoid back pain.  You should also be sure to get up and walk around for a little bit as well.

If you cannot get up and walk around due to an issue at work, standing and stretching may also help as well.  Although, stretching properly is important – stand up straight and reach to your right and your left with your hand over your head.

While it may look like you are fidgeting, adjusting your sitting position is another great way to avoid aches and pains later. From crossing your legs from one side to the other, to stretching in your chair may help avoid issues.
